20.07.2022
The Ministry of CGMS appealed to the police in order to stop the earthworks being carried out on the top of Mount Hatis. "We took as a basis the professional conclusion of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography regarding the damage to the newly discovered fortress on the top. We have applied for measures to be taken as soon as possible to stop the earthworks on the top of Hatis, to study the conclusion and to proceed according to the law," said Gegham Melikbekyan, press secretary of the ministry. Let's remind that on the initiative of "Prosperous Armenia" party chairman Gagik Tsarukyan, the foundation stone of the monumental statue of Jesus Christ on the top of Mount Hatis took place on July 9. The idea of the statue and especially its location is controversial and has been criticized by some professional circles. The Armenian Apostolic Church also expressed its opposition to the installation of the statue. The church urged Tsarukyan not to implement such an initiative, as it contradicts the tradition of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Despite the position of the church, Tsarukyan did not cancel the project. A few days ago, at the government session, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that they received the documentation and positively evaluate the installation of the statue. According to Pashinyan, it will promote tourism.
